On October 11, 2024, an international round table was held dedicated to the upcoming elections to the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan on October 27, 2024. The round table was organized by the Center for European and Asian Studies of Russia, the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Consulate General of the Republic of Uzbekistan in Yekaterinburg, the Center for Foreign Policy Research and Initiatives under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the International Institute of Central Asian Studies of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

 

Particular attention was paid to changes and additions made to the electoral legislation, which testify to the openness and democratic nature of the legislative system of the Republic of Uzbekistan. It was also noted that 150 deputies of the Legislative Chamber, 65 deputies of the Jokargy Kenes of Karakalpakstan, as well as deputies of regional, Tashkent and 208 district (city) kengashes will be elected in the upcoming elections. Thus, about 30 thousand candidates and about 90 thousand of their authorized representatives are expected to actively participate in the election process, as well as the participation of more than 120 thousand members of election commissions as organizers and more than 70 thousand local and foreign (international) observers. The elections will be held for the first time on the basis of a majoritarian-proportional (mixed) system, where the electoral districts are divided into single-mandate and a single electoral district.

 

According to the participants of the round table, the ongoing election campaign and the election results will become one of the important indicators of democratic statehood in our country, and are of great importance in the implementation of the constitutional rights of citizens to vote and be elected, to participate in the democratic formation of state bodies in full compliance with national legislation and international electoral standards.
